I DID NOT RELATE TO ONE THING we discussed in Snatched… Because I related to everything.
I got a B in gym class my freshman year of high school. When I graduated with a 3.9 GPA, the only thing that kept me from being Valedictorian of my class was freshman gym. And I got the message that when it came to fitness, I wasn’t good enough.
I’ve struggled with body image and weight my whole life. Like almost everyone I know, I’ve gone through times when fitness is a priority, and I’m going to the gym, I’m eating well, I’m feeling good. And then something goes wrong. A break-up, a bad time at work, a busy time. And I let my guard down.
I was at a deli in SoHo when I got the Snatched announcement email, and on a whim, I used my iPhone right there to sign up. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Sure, I lost 10 pounds and almost 3 inches off my waist and hips, but I was able to do that because I related to the people in my class who were all there for their own deeply personal reasons. Who were facing their own challenges but supported me through their FB posts and comments. And because I related to the feelings of not being enough. I related to using food the wrong way. I related to trying to out-train my diet. I related to gremlins who said I couldn’t. But through this process of getting Snatched, I learned to tell them to fuck off. I learned to look at myself in the mirror and love him, and that made every awful workout I had to do at a normal gym possible.
I’m through letting people grade my performance with a B. Fuck them. I’m the only person giving the grades around here. And I nailed this shit. I got an A+.
